Bird Flu scares migratory birds at Pong Dam, death toll rises to 2700

By Mohan Lal Verma
Shimla, Jan 5 (UNI) The Bird Flu confirmation in the Pong Dam Wildlife Sanctuary drew the attention of Ornithologists and bird watchers across the world, as the death toll due to the disease at this Ramsar Site crossed the 2700 mark on Tuesday.
The Pong Dam, which attracts more than 1.25 lakh migratory birds every year, has become ground zero for the outbreak of Bird Flu in the country.
A day after the H5N1 virus was confirmed among hundreds of dead migratory birds at Pong Dam Lake in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh in various Virulogy labs and Vet testing centres, the Vetinary and Wildlife authority was kept on high alert.
The main cause of concern at Pong Dam is the presence of thousands of migratory birds from across Himalaya and Siberia, who come here for winter sojourn.
Initial reports with UNI hinted that the Wildlife authority was alerted much in advance about the Avian Influenza outbreak.
The Veterinary department, particularly in Kangra district, was rushing to Chicken shops to contain the spread of flu to domestic poultry birds and human beings.
The data released by the state government on Tuesday confirmed that a number of migratory waterfowl,
mostly Bar-Headed Geese, were found dead along the Pong dam banks and grounds, as counting of more carcasses was underway.
Rapid response teams were constituted, who were collecting samples of poultry from an area of radius 10 km
from around the Pong Dam lake, as it was declared a surveillance zone,
''Fortunately, there has so far been no report of any unusual sickness or death among the poultry in the area,'' said Animal Husbandry Deputy Director (Epidemiology) Munish Batta.
Poultry samples are being sent to the northern regional disease diagnostic laboratory in Jalandhar, Dr Batta added.
The Kangra district administration has banned all human and livestock activities within an area of one km from the lake's periphery, as this areas is declared a containment zone.
There is prohibition on slaughter, sale, purchase and export of any poultry, birds, fish and their products in Fatehpur, Dehra, Jawali and Indora sub-divisions of the district, which surround the lake. The shops selling these products have been ordered shut.
Dr Batta said the national bird flu action plan has been set in motion in the state, and the frontline field staff were provided with adequate PPE kits and preventive medicines.
The confirmation of Bird Flu in India was first reported among domestic Crow in Jaipur of Rajasthan, followed by Pong Dams and other water sanctuary areas in the country.
Since the Renuka, Govind Sagar and other lakes in the state also attract migratory birds in a small number, the respective district administrations have also sounded an alert, however, no confirmation of Bird Flu was found at any place other than Pong Dam for H5N1.
