Tourism in Egypt sees revenue go down by 67.2% in 2020

Tourism is a major sector in the Egyptian economy. However, revenue declined by 67.2% in 2020, after achieving USD13 billion in 2019. In 2019, Egypt witnessed 13 million international tourist arrivals, while in 2020, they went down by 69.5%.


The UNWTO said that year-on-year, global tourism lost about USD935 billion in revenue between January and October 2020.


The drop was mainly propelled by the corona virus pandemic. The minister of Planning and Economic Development, Hala El Said, met with minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Khaled El Enany for discussing plans for the tourism sector.


Khaled El Enany said that in spite of the pandemic, Egypt announced a number of archeological discoveries that will have a positive impact on tourism restart.
