Trump news - live: President’s fans turn violent after he goads them to march and rails at ‘bullsh*t’ election
Donald Trump has turned up the pressure on Mike Pence to challenge the certification of the Electoral College in Congress today, despite the vice president having no power to do so. Mr Trump said he would be “very disappointed’ in Mr Pence if he didn't do what the president wanted.
Congressional Republicans also faced strong scrutiny from Mr Trump during his rally in Washington DC. He told his supporters it was time for the Republican Party to get rid of “weak Congresspeople” who refused to challenge the election results, all while vowing to “never give up” or “concede” the election.
All of this comes as Mr Trump has continued to baselessly claim he won the 2020 presidential election, despite all 50 states certifying their results and no evidence showing massive voter fraud. Mr Trump called ballots that were counted later in the evening on Election Day “explosions of bullsh**”, which amused rally supporters.
Mr Trump implored his supporters to march on the US Capitol, the location where Congress is currently meeting to certify the Electoral College votes. Video footage showed supporters turning violent against police officers who were assigned to protect the US Capitol.
What time does Congress meet today and what happens if it objects to the electoral college?
