Spanish sales flat in December; Jeep, Dacia and Nissan record big gains

The Seat Leon (shown) was the second-best selling model in Spain for 2020, with 23,582 sales, trailing the Dacia Sandero. Seat was the best selling brand for the year, ahead of VW.

An increase in new-car sales to private customers and higher self-registrations countered a big drop in sales to rental companies in Spain in December.

Jeep, Dacia, Nissan, Mercedes and Toyota showed the strongest growth among volume brands.

Registrations were 105,841 in December compared with 105,853 in the same month of 2019, according to the ANFAC industry group.

The COVID-19 pandemic weighed heavily on the market, with registrations falling 32 percent for the year to 851,211, ANFAC said.

Sales to private customers in December rose by 3.5 percent, and company registrations (including self-registrations by automakers and dealers) increased by 18 percent. But those figures were offset by a 55 percent fall in sales to rental companies, as coronavirus restrictions limited travel and business trips.

A sales rebound in the first half of 2021 is far from certain, industry groups say. According to ANFAC, recovery “will hinge on the evolution of the pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis,” and could be complicated by an increase in registration tax and the end of a government scrapping program.

The dealer association Faconauto said it does not expect a recovery before 2022.

Spain’s scrapping program, called Plan Renove, expired in December with only 17 percent of the 250 million euro ($308 million) budget actually utilized. The Spanish government has so far declined to carry over the remaining funds to 2021.

The registration tax, which is applied at a CO2 emissions level of 120 grams per km and above, increased for many models on Jan. 1, as emissions values for each car were converted from the NEDC test to the more stringent WLTP procedure, which yields higher CO2 figures. But unlike in countries such as France or Italy, the Spanish government declined to ensure that the change was revenue-neutral.

    Winners and losers

A number of brands recorded strong double-digit growth for the month, including Lexus, up 59 percent; Tesla, up 51 percent; Land Rover, up 43 percent; and Smart, up 37 percent. Among higher-volume brands, Jeep sales grew by 35 percent, Dacia was up 26 percent, Nissan by 23 percent, Mercedes by 20 percent and Toyota by 19 percent.

Sales at VW’s Spanish brand Seat fell by 25 percent, and the brand fell out of the top spot for the month, a position it held in December 2019, behind Peugeot, VW and Mercedes. Among other VW Group brands, VW was down 2.5 percent, Skoda fell by 5.9 percent and Audi by 19 percent.

Within PSA Group, Opel registrations dropped 18 percent and Citroen gained 0.7 percent. Renault brand sales were down 2.6 percent for the month.

Fiat brand registrations increased 10 percent, helped by a 150 percent rise in sales of the 500 minicar, including the launch of the New 500 battery electric version.

Hyundai sales fell 4.7 percent, while sibling brand Kia posted a 3.3 percent decline.
Ford was down 13 percent. BMW sales fell 10 percent.

The Dacia Sandero small hatchback was the most popular model both during the month, with 3,469 sales, and the full year 2020, with 24,035 sales.

    Electrified vehicle sales soar

The EU’s new emissions targets for 2020-21 continued to boost sales of electrified vehicles. Sales of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles jumped 503 percent in December to 10,818 units, and a record 10 percent market share. Sales were bolstered by government incentives of up to 5,500 euros.

Sales of full-hybrid vehicles more than doubled to a 21.4 percent market share.

Sales of gasoline-powered cars dropped by 29 percent for a 41 percent market share, down 18 percentage points from December 2019.

Registrations of diesel-powered vehicles were down 10 percent for a 26.1 percent share, three percentage points lower than December 2019.
