Sri Lankan Navy apprehends 4 Indian nationals for smuggling turmeric, cardamom

Rameswaram, Jan 6 (UNI) The Sri Lankan Navy apprehended four Indian nationals for smuggling 1,680 kg of dried turmeric and 150 kg of cardamom in a dhow late on Tuesday night, official sources said here on Wednesday.
According to sources, an Inshore Patrol Craft of the Northwestern Naval Command intercepted the Indian dhow in Sri Lankan territorial waters north of Kudiramalei Point. During the search, about 1,680 kg of dried turmeric in 57 sacks and around 150 kg of cardamom in five sacks were recovered from the dhow.

The arrested were identified as Ranjith Kumar (40), Santhosh (42), Lourdhu (42) and Dharmar (64), all hailing from Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu.

The incarcerated Indian nationals along with the smuggled spices and dhow were handed over to the Customs Preventive Office in Katunayake for onward legal action.
