Crime against women: MSCW registers 110 cases

Imphal, January 04 2021: As many as 110 cases of crimes against women were recorded with the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) in 2020 while Imphal West district recorded the highest crime rate of 41 per one lakh population.

A report of the MSCW available with this paper shows most cases were of harassment/assault, domestic violence, marital disputes, fraud/cheating etc.

The commission registered 26 cases of harassment/assault, 18 cases of domestic violence, 13 marital disputes, 10 cases of bigamy, 11 cases of fraud/cheating, 8 cases of defamation, 8 cases of women's property rights/women's rights, 3 cases of maintenance, 2 cases each related to mob lynching, desertion, molestation, child custody, cyber crime, one case relating to police apathy and two other cases.

Crime rate
Imphal West recorded the highest crime rate of 41 (per lakh population) followed by Imphal East and Thoubal with the crime rate of 21 and 17 respectively.

Kangpokpi recorded the least crime rate of 1 .

Bishnupur recorded a crime rate of 6 while Kakching and Churachandpur recorded similar crime rate of 3 .

Community-wise, most of the crimes happened among the General category community and Muslims.

General community accounted for crime rate of 57 while Muslims accounted for a crime rate of 22 per one lakh population.

Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste accounted for the crime rates of 6 and 4 respectively while other communities accounted for a crime rate of 3 .
