Kerala declares Bird flu as state-specific disaster

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 5 (UNI) Kerala has declared Bird flu as a state-specific disaster and the neighbouring states have been alerted on the pandemic, State Animal Husbandry Director Dr KM Dileep said on Tuesday.
The bird flu, due to which thousands of ducks were killed in Alappuzha and Kottayam districts, has been included in the list of State-specific Disaster, the Director said.
Following the reports of bird flu in Kerala, the neighbouring Tamil Nadu state has banned the import of meat and eggs of domestic birds including ducks and chicken from Kerala and issued a high alert in the border areas.
Meanwhile, Alappuzha District Collector A Alexander banned the sales and use of meat and eggs of ducks and chicken in Kuttanad, Takazhy and Karthikappally taluks in this district.
The bird flu was detected in Thalavady, Palkippad, Nedumudy, Karuvatta, Thazhakkara and Edathuva Panchayats in Alappuzha District and Neendoor Panchayat in Kottayam District.
Control rooms were opened in Alappuzha and Kottayam districts to control the spread of the diseases. Preventive measures have been initiated in both the districts with the deployment of eight teams comprising five members of animal husbandry officials.
Dr Dileep said the H5N8 subtype of the Influenza A virus has been detected in five out of the eight samples sent for lab test to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases Lab in Bhopal.

After consulting with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, a decision on compensation will be announced later, he added.
The Minister also confirmed that the disease has not been spread to the people living in the affected areas. The State Forest Department also took steps to monitor areas where migratory birds visiting 10 km radius, Mr Raju said.
