Imphal, January 04 2021: JNIMS doctors staged a sit-in protest at the hospital premises today demanding appointment of Director of the institute within a week's time.

Speaking to media persons during the sit-in protest, Dr Neerajkumar, secretary of the Coordinating Committee JNIMS, said that the protest was jointly organised by the Teachers' Association JNIMS, JNIMS Students' Association and Resident Doctors' Association.

The protest was held to highlight the grievances of doctors and students of JNIMS, he said adding that the associations welcome the notification of the JNIMS authority inviting applications for the post of Director.

Nonetheless, the authority concerned should appoint a regular Director or Director in-charge in line with the rules and regulations of the National Medical Commission (NMC) within a week's time, he said.

JNIMS has about 800 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Timely appointment of a regular Director or Director in-charge would help save the careers of students and ensure smooth functioning of the institute.

The associations will continue with their agitation if the demand is not met, he added.

Notably, the Coordination Committee JNIMS had recently denounced the extension of tenure of Th Bhimo as the Director of the institute asserting it was against the rules and regulations of the NMC to extend the tenure of the Director for another six months after completion of 70 years of age.
