PM Modi to inaugurate Kochi-Mangaluru natural gas pipeline today
- According to a release of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), PM Modi will inaugurate Kochi-Mangaluru natural gas pipeline at 11 am today. The event will mark an important milestone towards the creation of 'One Nation One Gas Grid'.
- Prime Minister Modi has said that the " futuristic project will positively impact many people."
Slack kicks off 2021 with a global outage
- Slack, the messaging service used by millions of people for work and school, suffered a global outage on Monday, the first day back for most people returning from the New Year's holiday.
- It's the latest tech glitch to show how disruptive technical difficulties can be when millions of people are depending on just a few services to work and go to school from home during the pandemic.
- The outage began around 10 a.m. Eastern time and disrupted service in the US, Germany, India, the U.K., Japan and elsewhere. At 12:30 p.m., service was still sporadic and Slack said the outage was ongoing, but that some users may begin to see improvement. Most issues were resolved by 3 pm. on Monday afternoon.
UK prime minister orders new national coronavirus lockdown
- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a new national lockdown for England until at least mid-February to combat a fast-spreading new version of the coronavirus.
- Under the new rules, which are set to come into effect as soon as possible, primary and secondary schools and colleges will be closed for face to face learning except for the children of key workers. University students will not be returning until at least mid-February.
Niger announces 3-day national mourning
Niger's Interior Minister Alkache Alhada on Monday declared three days of nationwide mourning after terrorists attacked two villages in the west of the country killing about 100 people.
First new DACA applications approved in final weeks of 2020
- Over 170 new applicants have become the first individuals in several years to win approval to the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals programme for immigrants brought to the US as young people, the US government revealed in a court filing Monday.
- A report submitted by the Department of Homeland Security to Brooklyn federal court showed 171 new applications were approved from Nov 14 through the end of 2020 while 121 applications were denied and another 369 were rejected. In all, 2,713 initial applications were submitted.
Boat with more than 20 migrants sinks off Colombia's coast
- Rescue workers in Colombia are trying to locate more than 20 migrants whose boat sank as it tried to reach Panama.
- The sinking was reported on Monday by officials in Acandi, a municipality along the Gulf of Uraba, an inlet of the Caribbean sea that is lined by dense jungle. Thousands of undocumented migrants cross the gulf each year on small boats.
Amazon's Bezos tops list of richest charitable gifts in 2020
- The world's richest person made the single-largest charitable contribution in 2020, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual list of top donations, a $10 billion gift that is intended to help fight climate change.
- Amazon's founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, whose “real-time” worth Forbes magazine estimates at roughly $188 billion, used the contribution to launch his Bezos Earth Fund. The fund, which supports non-profits involved in the climate crisis, has paid out $790 million to 16 groups so far, according to the Chronicle.
