MANGALURU: The Mangaluru City police launched ‘Operation Suraksha’ on Sunday and checked areas under the Mangaluru South police Station and Barke police station limits for people unreasonably moving around in dark and unlit areas or drinking and creating a nuisance to law-abiding citizens.
City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said the area domination exercise was conducted to check people needlessly moving around in dark unlit areas. Nearly 101 people were picked up and their credentials verified. They were questioned about their suspicious or anti-social behaviour. Places such as gardens, parks, open stadiums, areas near bars, bus stands, lodges, railway tracks, will be checked and people drinking in cars, open fields, parked vehicles will be picked up.
DCP (Law and Order) Hariram Shankar and DCP (Crime and Traffic) Vinay A Gaonkar, ACPs, about 10 officers and about 50 staff are involved in this exercise that has been launched based on complaints received from the public.
Videos of the people caught being a nuisance have been recorded. Since it is the first time, they were let off with a warning after their parents or immediate family members were called. They were made to produce their ID cards for verification. About 12 transgenders were also picked up. The exercise will be conducted twice or thrice a week in various police station limits, the commissioner said, seeking public support.
Among those picked were youth who were found drinking near Nehru Maidan. Shashi Kumar warned the youth that cases will be booked against them in case they are found guilty again.
