IVRI 's preliminary report says migratory birds at Pong wetlands die of avian influenza

Shimla, Jan 4 (UNI) Mysterious deaths of over 1,000 migratory birds in a week in Himachal Pradesh's Pong wetlands were due to avian influenza or bird flu, preliminary reports of Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly of UP said on Monday.
Last week, the wildlife staff deployed in the Dhameta range had reported the sudden death of four Bar-Headed Geese and one Common Teal in the Fatehpur area. Following the incident, when the field staff scanned the entire stretch, they found around 1000 carcasses under wildlife ranges of Dhameta and Nagrota, post which authorities closed the wetlands for both tourists and locals.
The wildlife department has sent carcasses of birds to a veterinary laboratory in Shahpur and their viscera samples to the veterinary college in Palampur and the Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RDDL) in Jalandhar to ascertain the cause of birds death.
''A team of veterinary doctors from Kangra, also visiting the Guglara area for assessment of ground realities, has sent carcasses to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly, RDDL in Jalandhar and Wildlife Institute of India (WII) in Dehradun for further examination,'' the official said.
In Jal Mahal, lake of Jaipur in Rajasthan, as many as 252 birds, including seven crows, reportedly had died of bird flu.
Hundreds of thousands of birds are being culled in countries in Europe and East Asia as both regions are grappling with an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza.
More than 55,000 migratory birds have so far descended on the Pong wetland in Kangra district for their winter sojourn.
