The State government issued a Government Order (GO) allotting Rs 224.8 crore for renovation of irrigation system in Cauvery sub-basin.
Chennai: The order mentioned that under the NABARD Infrastructure Development Assistance (NIDA), extension, renovation and modernisation of Cauvery sub-basin has been undertaken at the financial assistance of Rs 3,384 crore. Out of the total amount, 10 per cen of the project cost would be borne by the State government.
PWD officials from Tiruchy region had submitted a proposal to undertake 33 packages as part of the renovation works. The total fund of Rs 224.8 crore has been split into two and the irrigation works are being carried out in Thanjavur district.
The first renovation work will be carried out in Budalur Taluk of Thanjavur district at the cost of Rs 122.6 crore and the second renovation work will be carried out Budalur and Thiruvaiyaru taluks at the cost of Rs 102.2 crore There were reports that the bed of Cauvery river’s upper portion was silted up and characterised by huge shoal formation and thick vegetation, which are affecting the flow of water. Due to these obstructions, water could not reach the delta regions properly.
