Chennai, Jan 4 (UNI) Mr Justice Sanjib Banerjee was on Monday sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit administered the oath of office to Mr Banerjee at a function held at the Raj Bhavan.
The Governor also handed over the Warrant of Appointment
signed by President Ram Nath Kovind.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief
Minister O Panneerselvam, Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal,
Chief Secretary K Shanmugam, DGP J K Tripathy and Greater
Chennai City Police Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal,
Judges, members of the judiciary and other dignatories
participated in the swearing-in ceremony.
Earlier, Mr Banerjee had served as the senior most judge
of the Calcutta High Court.
Mr Banerjee succeeds Chief Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi,
who retired from service on Thursday.
Born on November 2, 1961, Justice Banerjee obtained a
Bachelor’s degree with honours in Economics in 1983,
before completing his law degree in 1986-87.
He was enrolled as an advocate in 1990 and practised
primarily at the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme
Court.
He has appeared before the High Courts in Delhi, Bombay,
Allahabad, Patna, Jharkhand, Guwuhati, Odisha, Karnataka,
Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.
Mr Banerjee was elevated as a permanent judge of Calcutta
High Court on June 22, 2006.
