
The Income Tax department Monday is carrying out surveys at the offices of Zee and Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T India) in connection with alleged tax evasion, sources in the know told ET.
According to these sources , 15 locations of Zee in Mumbai are being surveyed by the IT sleuths. They added that the action will continue till evening.
The action on the two firms follows information shared by DGGI on alleged Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion with the tax department, a senior tax officer told ET.
Erstwhile Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI), now renamed as Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) is the apex intelligence organisation functioning under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, entrusted with the task of collection, collation and dissemination of intelligence relating to evasion of GST.
“The department’s limited verification action on these two firms is based on information shared by GST intelligence wing,” the official added. “ The searches are being carried out under section 133A of the IT Act that empowers the tax officers to carry out surveys,” the official added.
When requested for a comment, Zee spokesperson told ET, “The officials from the tax department have visited the offices of the Company, with certain queries. The concerned officials of the Company are providing all the required information and extending complete co-operation.”
L&T was not immediately available for a comment.
