New Delhi: As many as 38 people in India have now tested positive for the mutant variant of coronavirus from the UK that is said to have a higher rate of transmission.
According to a statement released by the health ministry Monday, all of these Covid-19 patients have been isolated in single rooms, and their close contacts placed under quarantine.
The number of Covid-19 tests conducted in the last 24 hours dropped below eight lakh in the last 24 hours, while the test positivity rate stood at 2.2 per cent. The number of daily Covid-19 cases remained under 17,000 Monday.
The number of deaths recorded in the last 24 hours was the lowest since 31 May, when fatalities stood at 222.
Daily cases
As many as 16,504 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the last 24 hours — over 62 per cent of these were reported from the five states with the highest number of active cases.
Active cases
The number of active Covid-19 cases fell to 2,43,953 Monday. This is the first time since 5 July that active cases have dropped below the 2.5 lakh mark in India.
Number of deaths
As many as 214 Covid-19 patients died across the country in the last 24 hours, bringing the total coronavirus death toll in India to 1,49,649 since the beginning of the pandemic. Nearly a third of the total deaths have been reported from Maharashtra.
Mortality rate
Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR), which is already the highest, further increased to 3.21 Monday. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR has reduced to 2.55.
Sikkim’s fatality rate is now at 2.17. India’s overall case fatality rate is at 1.45.
Daily tests
In the last 24 hours, the number of tests conducted reduced to 7,35,978 across 1,201 government laboratories and 1,098 private laboratories.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 17,56,35,761 tests have been carried out in India.
Positivity rate
The test positivity rate increased to 2.2 per cent Monday. However, overall test positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, has now reduced to 5.8 per cent.
Recovered cases
In the last 24 hours, 19,557 people recovered from Covid-19 across the country. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 99,46,867 people have recovered from the infection. The recovery rate in India is now at 96.19 per cent.
Total cases
Since the beginning of the pandemic, as many as 1,03,40,469 people have been infected with Covid-19. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
States with the highest active cases
Kerala’s active cases count fell to 65,467 Monday. As many as 4,600 people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours, which brought the total number of people infected in the state to 7,75,852 since the beginning of the pandemic.
As many as 25 people in the state have died of Covid-19, bringing the total Covid-19 death toll of Kerala to 3,141.
Maharashtra’s active case count fell to 55,471 Monday. With 3,282 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, a total of 19,42,136 Covid-19 cases were detected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic. Maharashtra has the highest number of cases in the country.
In the last 24 hours, the state reported 35 Covid deaths, bringing the Covid death toll in the state to 49,666.
Uttar Pradesh recorded 737 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which took the total number of cases in the state to 5,88,171.
The state’s active case count fell to 12,858 Monday. With 16 deaths in the last 24 hours, the total number of Covid-19 deaths in the state is now 8,403.
Karnataka made a comeback this week to the list of states with the highest number of active cases. With 810 new Covid-19 infections detected in the last 24 hours, the state’s active case count stood at 10,912.
Karnataka’s Covid-19 death toll so far stands at 12,107, with eight fatalities reported in the last 24 hours. A total of 9,21,938 cases of Covid-19 were detected in the state since the pandemic, which is the highest after Maharashtra.
In West Bengal, 896 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, which brought the total number of cases detected from the state so far to 5,54,975.
The number of active cases in the state dropped to 10,446 Monday. With 26 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 toll is now 9,792.
