The ruling AIADMK, which has commenced its campaign for the upcoming Assembly elections, started targeting DMK, the principal opposition party by recalling the incidents, where law and order was disturbed, during their previous rule from 2006 to 2011.
Chennai: ‘Namadhu Amma’, the mouthpiece of AIADMK, on Sunday, in a column, criticised DMK recalling the murders that happened in their previous rule. The column alleged that several high profile political murders took place during the DMK regime including that of former DMK functionaries Tha Kurittinan, former minister Aladi Aruna, Anna Nagar Ramesh, Perambalur Sadiq Basha, CPM Leelavathi besides three employees of Dinakaran newspaper.
The column also alleged that law and order situation was so bad at that time and asked voters whether people of Tamil Nadu need such a rule again. AIADMK had also questioned that with such a history how can DMK criticise the ruling government.
Though accusations are the common agenda of every political party in their election campaign, AIADMK has been targeting DMK for its family politics in the initial days of campaign and has now shifted its focus on law and order issues during the DMK rule. Starting from Chief Minster Edappadi K Palaniswami to ministers and party functionaries, law and order issue has been one of the important cards that is played against DMK.
The Chief Minister, in a recent election campaign, said that only because of maintaining law and order in the State, for the past 10 years, Tamil Nadu could attract more investments and recalled the MOUs signed by the government in the last one year, where the State had attracted investments to the tune of more than Rs 60,000 crore.
Law Minister C Ve Shanmugam, in an election meeting at Tindivanam, said that DMK rule was characterised by kangaroo courts and rowdyism. He said that if people vote DMK to power Tamil Nadu will once again witness a regime of lawlessness and rowdyism flourishing across the State “Tamil Nadu has been a peaceful State for the past 10 years as rowdy elements were suppressed with iron hands. But if DMK comes to power these rowdy elements will flourish once again,” said Shanmugam.
