SC agrees to hear Panjab University students' letter on human rights violation against farmers

New Delhi, Jan 4 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to consider a letter petition sent to Chief Justice SA Bobde by a group of Panjab University students on the human rights violation against farmers that took place on November 26 and 27 during a protest at Haryana-Delhi border.

Apex Court bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde and also comprising Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian asserted that the top court will not interfere with the agitation in question and added that the right to protest is part of a fundamental right.

The court also learned that roads are blocked by the police in order to prevent the entry of the farmers into Delhi, before taking the open letter of students as Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

In the letter sent to CJI, the law and art students of Panjab University urged an inquiry against Haryana and Delhi police who were using water cannons, tear gas shells and lathis on farmers who were peacefully protesting against the Centre’s newly-enacted agriculture reform laws.

They urged the Apex Court directing Haryana and Delhi police to withdraw all the cases against farmers which were registered under alleged "political vendetta".

They also sought to ensure the safety of peasants, and provide basic amenities to all, especially women, children and the elderly. Mobile toilet vans should be provided at the protest sites, the letter read.
