Tripura CPM protests move of replacing statue of former CM

Agartala, Jan 3 (UNI) The opposition CPI-M protested the decision of Khowai Municipal Council in West Tripura to replace the statue of former Chief Minister and one of the founders of communist in Tripura Nripen Chakraborty with Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, the pillar of Bengali language in Khowai town.
The CPI-M MLA from Khowai and senior leader Nirmal Biswas alleged that the move of the administration is politically motivated and showing an utter disregard to the history of Tripura by the ruling BJP. He stated that Vidyasagar has been well recognised in the state and there are several places in the town befitting for installing the statue of Iswar Chandra.
“The BJP goons had dismantled the statue of Vidyasagar in Kolkata about two years ago. In Tripura, BJP had bulldozed the statue of Lenin in Belonia soon after they came to power in 2018 and many other statues subsequently in different places of the state. Now, they are using administration to deface the history of the state,” Biswas said.
Coming down heavily on the decision of replacing the statue, he said, “We have no objection if a statue of Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar is installed here but at no point, the statue of the former chief minister should be shifted. I have already lodged the protest before the administrator of the municipal council but no response has come yet .”
The statue of Nripen Chakraborty was installed in 2010, as the memory of communist movement in Tripura, which had begun from Khowai during the 1960s.
