Smoothie bowls have become one of the biggest breakfast trends in the past few years. One can make smoothies according to their choice of fruits, vegetables, nuts and cereals. Smoothie bowls are a complete meal and one good bowl helps you feel fuller.

Chennai: When restaurateur Japtej Ahluwalia opened Auroville’s popular Bread & Chocolate in Chennai, he never expected that their smoothie bowls will have a lot of takers. “We have savoury and sweet smoothie bowls. People have started practising clean and healthy eating habits. They are looking for nutritious, wholesome food with not many calories. Smoothies are healthy alternatives and tasty as well. Till now, the misconception was that healthy food is not tasty and only fried food is tasty; we are changing that idea. At Bread & Chocolate, we have three smoothie bowls — granola, chocolate and tropical smoothie bowls. The common ingredients in all of them are banana and coconut milk and the rest of the ingredients change. Tropical smoothie bowls have pineapple, pomegranate, seasonal fruits, coconut milk, bananas and nuts,” says Japtej.
Arjun Dev, the owner of Mearth Cafe, opines that smoothie bowls have become the recent favourite of many Chennaiites. “It a very nutritious meal and has a lot of ingredients. A smoothie bowl becomes a complete meal because it fills you up. Banana is the base ingredient — you can blend any fruits of your choice like strawberries, avocados, oranges, etc, along with yogurt, milk or plant-based milk and granola, freshly-cut fruits, nuts and seeds (flax and chia seeds). The concept of a smoothie bowl is that a person will get different types of nutrients from a single meal. These days, we have become extra cautious about what we eat and I think smoothies are the perfect meal for a good day’s start. This is one of the best ways to start healthier eating habits. One can easily make a smoothie bowl at home. You just have to put all ingredients into a blender. Once it is ready, you can add some crunchy toppings and freshly-cut fruits.
“The trend of having smoothie bowls as a breakfast option is picking up in the city and now more restaurants are adding it to their menu as well. For a working individual, a smoothie bowl would be a great breakfast option. At Mearth Cafe, we have 4-5 options — the bases are avocado, strawberry, fig, orange and pineapple apart from the main base, banana,” shares Arjun.
