BHUBANESWAR: The state has recorded a growth of 20.01 per cent in gross GST collection (CGST, IGST, SGST and cess) during December 2020 compared to December 2019. It is considered a significant growth among major states in the country.
According to figures released by the state GST commissioner’s office on Saturday, gross GST collection during December was Rs 2860.20 crore against Rs 2383.29 crore collected during December 2019.
As far as collection of state GST (SGST) during December is concerned, there has also been growth of around 5.37 per cent as total SGST collection during December is estimated at Rs 765.26 crore compared to Rs 726.29 crore collected during Rs 726.29 crore, a positive sign for the state’s economy.
The growth in overall GST collection is because of significant 38 per cent growth in collection of integrated GST (IGST) collection during December, which is collected from supply of goods and services during inter-state trade, said a senior official in the GST commissioner’s office.
Collection of IGST during December is pegged at Rs 965.75 crore against Rs 696.04 crore collected during December last year, a growth of 38.75 per cent, which is the highest growth in a month of the current financial year.
The official said even as there has been over 5 per cent growth in SGST collection during December because of increase in public consumption and continuous follow up on filing returns within the due date, the GST commissioner’s office said it has been targeted to achieve at least 10 to 15 per cent growth in SGST collection so that more revenue will come to the state’s kitty.
With gradual opening up of most sectors in the economy as well as with increase in government expenditure in infrastructure projects and increase in public consumption, the SGST collection is expected to increase further in the coming months.
Collection of GST from the mining sector, which continues to be sluggish due to non-operation of many mines, may also witness positive growth with gradual resumption of operations, said official sources in the GST commissioner’s office. The total non-GST collection from sale of petroleum products and liquor has also witnessed around 16.72 per cent growth in December with collection of Rs 701 crore compared to Rs 600.60 crore collected during December 2019.
“We have been focusing on increasing the tax base of GST with constant survey and registration. Up to December of the current financial year, a total of 35,461 new entities have been brought under the GST fold in the current financial year. All circles have been instructed to ensure at least 90 per cent return filing within the due date,” said the official.
