Imphal, January 02 2021: The Indian Medical Association Manipur State Branch welcomed New Year with a bicycle rally "Doctors on Pedal" giving awareness about health and fitness to the people.

MLA Karam Shyam led the rally.

At the reception programme held at Lilong Chajing Ibudhou Pureiromba Eco park yesterday, MLA Karam Shyam said that regular cycling promotes health and fitness and the "Doctors on Pedal" rally has spread the right awareness to the people.

Doctors' service is to humanity and they give positive messages about health and wellbeing to the people.

"When aged persons of the age of 60/70 are using bicycles, teenagers nowadays are demanding their parents to buy expensive bikes," Karam Shyam said hinting that teenagers/youths are increasingly relying on motor vehicles as a means of easy transport and commuting.

The bicycle rally has spread the right message of health to the people and youths/teenagers should learn about the benefits of cycling, he said.

Karam Shyam stated that he cycles every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to his farm to do work and visit places and meet people in his Constituency.

During his time as a Minister, he used to cycle to office every Thursday, said Karam Shyam adding this makes him stay physically and mentally healthy.

On various developments projects taken up at Langthabal Assembly Constituency, he said that the Heibokching Biodiversity Park is a project to promote tourism and attract tourists.

He further stated that Ibudhou Pureiromba Eco park and Lilong Konung Park have been completed.

IMA Manipur State Branch president Dr Shyamkumar Laishram said that there is a shorter life expectancy of doctors in India due to work pressure and mental stress.

With the aim to provide some relief and comfort to the doctors, a group named "Doctors on Pedal" was formed with the motto "wheeling and healing".

The group has been organising awareness campaigns on health and COVID-19, he said.

The doctors and senior members of the IMA State Branch covered 15 kilometres on bicycles.

IMA State Branch former president Dr Y Mohen, senior members, Dr T Arun, Professor Ch Arunkumar, Dr Sinam Rajendro, IMA secretary Dr Ng Arunkumar, Imphal City Cycling mayor Dr Sanjeev Nepram, medical students and members of Manipur Adventure and Mountain Biking Association took part in the rally.
