67th retrenched teacher of Tripura commits suicide amid ongoing agitation

Agartala, Jan 3 (UNI) The terminated teachers of 10,323 have been in agitation for a month announced to join in their respective schools from where they had been come out in March last year following the direction of Supreme Court on Jan 6 next after one of those teachers committed suicide yesterday over the debt burden.
A 32–years old sacked teacher Uttam Tripura of Kamalkanta Para under Belonia sub-division of South Tripura had committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence. The distressed wife of the deceased teacher Shefali Tripura has jumped into her husband’s funeral. However, she was rescued by the neighbours with minor injuries.
Police launched an investigation into the incident registering it as a case of unnatural death.
According to the report, Uttam was suffering from a serious crisis with his wife and two children for the past six months after he lost the job. He had reportedly tried to start a new business but due to lockdown and financial constraints, it was not possible.
The agitating teachers claimed that Uttam had joined the demonstration too with a hope to get an alternative option for livelihood. Meantime, he got a call from the house that the family has no foodstuff and spending days without food. The people from where he owed money had also exerted pressure for repayment of the loan.
“The hopeless future and debt burden seem to be the reasons for his suicide,” said Ranbir Saha, one of the agitating teachers here adding that many of them have committed suicide and some of them have suffered from cardiac arrest and psychological trauma. As many as 66 have died in the past few months due to shock while Uttam became 67th victim of the inhuman act of Tripura government.
The neighbours of the victim teacher’s family said that Uttam Tripura had once been a labourer even after passing 'Madhyamik' examination because of poverty but got the job of a primary school teacher in 2014.
After retrenchment from service Uttam yet again fell into a deep financial crisis to maintain his old and infirm parents, his wife and two children.
To make matters worse Uttam was also under pressure to repay the bank loan he had drawn to repair his tattered home. He was in a state of extreme depression over his own and his family's future.
