A gang of youth, who were selling ganja on a special offer of ‘buy one-get one free’ during New Year’s Eve celebration, was arrested by the police in Anakaputhur on Friday. In all, six persons were arrested, from whom the officials seized two kg ganja.
Chennai: Officials of Shankar Nagar police station received a tip-off that ganja was being supplied near the Anakaputhur Municipality park at midnight during New year. The informer said there was a special deal ahead of the New Year, offering one packet free with every packet bought. Following this, policemen in plainclothes went to the spot and nabbed six youth who were allegedly found selling ganja. The officials also seized 2 kg ganja from them. During inquiry, the police identified the accused as Ravi (28) of Kundrathur, Vijay (21) of Anakaputhur, and Sivakumar (32), Saravanan (21), Mansoor Ali (19) and Gopi Shankar (21) of Kasthuri Nagar. All of them were taken to the police station for questioning and after inquiry, they were remanded in judicial custody. The police are also investigating from whom they purchased ganja which they were selling for the low price.
2.8 kg ganja seized from peddlers across different parts of city
Meanwhile, the Nolambur and Foreshore Estate police arrested three peddlers in possession of 2.8 kg ganja. Based on a tip-off, officials kept vigil for peddlers near Mogappair West bus terminus and secured two on Thursday. They were identified as K Deenadayalan (35) and K Saravanan (41), both from Mogappair West.
Around 1.5 kg ganja, which they had kept in small sachets, were seized. Similarly, Foreshore Estate police arrested a 28-year-old man in possession of ganja and a search in his house led to the seizure of 1.3 kg more of the contraband. The accused, R Vinoth (28) of Pallikaranai, was remanded in judicial custody. Officials said that he sold the sachets to users in and around Srinivasapuram.
