Kerala reports 5,328 new COVID cases, 4,985 recoveries: Health Minister

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 2 (UNI) COVID-19 was confirmed in 5,328 people newly in Kerala on Saturday while 4,985 patients have recovered from the disease, taking the total number of recoveries in the State to 7,02,576, Health Minister KK Shailaja said.
The Minister in a press release here this evening said "Of the positive cases reported today, 4,801 were cases of local transmission and the source of infection for 392 was unknown."
Meanwhile, 21 recent deaths were established as caused by Covid-19 and the death toll in the state is now 3,116.
She said 54,098 samples were tested during the last 24 hours and the test positivity rate is 9.85%. So far, a total of 80,18,822 samples have been sent for testing.
In the last 24 hours, Covid was not detected in anyone who recently came from the UK. Of the 37 samples sent earlier to NIV, Pune for confirmation of the mutant Covid strain, 11 have tested negative with no strain of the genetically modified virus.
The district-wise numbers of those who tested positive for Coronavirus infection are Ernakulam 743, Kozhikode 596, Malappuram 580, Kottayam 540, Pathanamthitta 452, Thrissur 414, Kollam 384, Alappuzha 382, Thiruvananthapuram 290, Palakkad 240, Idukki 223, Wayanad 204, Kannur 197 and Kasaragod 83. Of those diagnosed, 78 have travelled to the state from outside.
The count of the people infected through contact in the districts are Ernakulam 691, Kozhikode 578, Malappuram 547, Kottayam 501, Pathanamthitta 386, Thrissur 398, Kollam 376, Alappuzha 372, Thiruvananthapuram 202, Palakkad 124, Idukki 217, Wayanad 191, Kannur 149 and Kasaragod 69.
There were 57 healthcare workers among those infected today from these districts - Ernakulam 14, Thrissur 8, Pathanamthitta 7, Kozhikode 5; Kollam, Kottayam & Kannur 4 each, Thiruvananthapuram 3; Palakkad, Wayanad & Kasaragod 2 each, and Idukki & Malappuram 1 each.
The district-wise figures of the patients who tested negative today are Thiruvananthapuram 355, Kollam 361, Pathanamthitta 273, Alappuzha 346, Kottayam 893, Idukki 153, Ernakulam 552, Thrissur 418, Palakkad 274, Malappuram 457, Kozhikode 445, Wayanad 178, Kannur 219 and Kasaragod 61. At present, there are 65,374 patients still undergoing treatment in the State.
There are 2,40,490 people totally under isolation across the state - 2,28,679 under home or institutional quarantine and 11,811 in hospitals. 1,223 persons were admitted to the hospitals today.
Six places were demarcated as new hotspots today while 14 areas were excluded. Presently, there are 448 hotspots in Kerala.
