Previous govts ignored issue of housing, says Modi as he unveils projects for six cities

NEW DELHI: In the next one year, India will get advanced construction technologies which can be used to build housing complexes in less time and of better quality. PM Narendra Modi on Friday laid the foundation of six Light House Projects in six major cities and in each of these projects nearly 2.7 units of houses will be built per day using such new technologies from countries such as the USA, Germany, Finland, France, New Zealand and Canada.
The six projects were launched in Indore, Rajkot, Chennai, Ranchi, Agartala and Lucknow. About 1,000 houses at each location will be constructed in a year, using six distinct technologies from a basket of 54 such shortlisted technologies. "In 12 months, 1,000 houses will be built at each site, which means 2.5 to 3 houses will be built per day and 90-100 flats in a month. The government expects these will be complete before January 26, 2022," Modi said.
He added these technologies will be subsequently used across the country for faster construction of houses. Modi said the houses being built using new technologies will take less time to build and will be resilient, affordable and comfortable. This is an imperative for the government which has announced to meet the Housing for All target in 2022. Construction industry sources said though some of these pre-fabricated technologies are being used for construction of buildings and office complexes by private players, these have not been used on a large scale yet.
Lashing out at the previous government, Modi said housing projects were not given priority and they were not concerned about the quality of housing infrastructure. "Today, India has taken a different approach. We have decided to change the approach towards housing. Why should the country not get better technology?" he asked. He said housing for the poor and the middle class has been a priority for his government.
Modi said in Ranchi, houses will be built using Germany's 3D construction system. In this, each room will be made separately, and then the entire structure will be put together much like toymaker Lego's building blocks. Similarly, houses are being built in Agartala with steel frames using technology from New Zealand, which can withstand major earthquakes.
