CHANDIGARH: Haryana has started the broadcast of inhouse radio stations from Ambala, Panipat and Faridabad jails.
Haryana director general of prisons K Selvraj and other officials were present during the virtual launch held via video conferencing from the Faridabad Jail premises.
The studios have been created in the jail premises and 21 inmates have been given training for radio jockeys, news anchoring and other programmes related to law and entertainment.
Tinka Jail Radio (TJR) is the name of the radio station and the project has been conceived by Tinka Tinka Foundation headed by Dr Vartika Nanda. Besides entertainment, the main aim of this project is to make the inmates realise that they are important part of the society.
Sources said 21 RJs, include five women inmates from Faridabad jail, have been trained by the foundation head.
Referring to broadcasting arrangements, officials said jail inmates would prepare various programmes, including songs on demands, laws related to inmates and general law and order and competition of jail inmates. Besides this, the jail department has also started preparing the list of artists in various jails for their preparation.
Officials said each jail barrack shall have one speaker and the radio shall be broadcasted for one hour every day.
Notably, Tihar jail was first to start such a radio station in 2013. Following this, the foundation had started a station in Agra jail in July 2019.
Now, after successful launch in Haryana, the foundation is planning to expand the service in other jails of the state. There are total 20,423 inmates, include 900 women, housed in three central jails and 16 district jails across the state.
