CHANDIGARH: The city municipal corporation (MC) will start charging garbage collection fee from the public from January. While sharing this, municipal commissioner K K Yadav said on Friday that the garbage collection fee for the month of December 2020 shall be collected by private garbage collectors as per the previous structure of payment.
He said the MC will collect the garbage collection fees from the residents of sectors 1 to 30 from January 1 onwards as the mechanical garbage collection through the MC vehicles started in the last week of December 2020.
Since, during the meeting, which took place last month, the collectors had agreed that the garbage collectors will come on vehicles, either as drivers or helpers, but they will not take salary from the municipal corporation on DC rates. The MC had agreed that the collectors will get payments based on the number of houses they cover and the MC will collect the money from the residents and the same will be given to the garbage collectors.
A section of garbage collectors continued their protest against the new system on Friday and dumped waste in front of the MC office in Sector 17.
In the first-phase, sectors 1 to 30 are being covered and the civic body authority is planning to start the second phase by next week. Currently, around 100 twin-bin vehicles are being used by the sanitation department to run this new system of source segregation.
