Even as the city was under the stringent lockdown for most of the year 2020, the crime rate has only marginally reduced, according to the data released by the Greater Chennai Police.
Chennai: While the number of murders, considered heinous of crimes, reported in Greater Chennai limits this year stood at 147, which is 26 lesser compared to 173 murders recorded in 2019, police have solved all 147 cases by arresting the suspects. Some of the most gruesome murders reported this year include the killing of three family members in Sowcarpet, the murder of college girl for gain by construction labourer in Tiruverkadu, killing of the landlord for demanding rent in Kundrathur and murder of a teen by a group in a fight over ganja peddling in Tiruvottiyur.
Similarly, a total of 246 cases of chain snatchings were reported this year against 310 cases reported in 2019.
After the special attention was given to curb the ganja peddling under the present Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, the amount of ganja seized from peddlers were 2,966 kg while it was a mere 1,128 kg in 2019. Also, the number of cases booked against ganja peddlers and smugglers was 522 against 452 cases last year.
While city police have registered 938 mobile phone snatching and theft cases, as many as 2,834 stolen mobiles were retrieved through IMEI tracing and handed over to the owners.
The recently-created cyber cells in all 12 police districts have registered 87 first information reports and issued 1925 CSR receipts and have managed to recover about Rs 1.56 cr lost money of victims in the last four months.
