A 27-year-old contractual employee of the Central Railway reportedly attempted suicide on Thursday over non-payment of salary by the contractor for the past six months.
Before consuming poison at his residence in Kalyan, announcer Venkatesh Vemugutti recorded a video in which he said that he is taking the extreme step as he has not been paid his salary since months. He was rushed to Central Hospital at Ulhasnagar, where he is recovering.
He alleged that senior railway officials were also not intervening in the matter and it had become difficult to survive.
Following this incident, a number of announcers staged a protest at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) station on Thursday night and also met the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager at the divisional headquarters to discuss their grievances.
The railway officials said that the dispute was between the company that the railways have given the contract to and its employees.
Central Railway chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar said the Central Railway has been clearing the bills regularly and will clear any further bills if raised. “After the workers were convinced, they went back to work and the issue has now been resolved,” he added.
