India’s notoriously inefficient tolling system is getting smarter

In 2008, with the help of a French company, Egis, known for running state-of-the-art toll-collection projects, the Netherlands government implemented a scheme called Spits Mijden, meaning rush hour-avoidance. Under the scheme, toll companies and the government rewarded commuters who did not use busy roads during peak hours. This led to a 8%-10% fall in traffic during the rush hour. An average 40% of commuters in the city of Rotterdam
