An expert panel of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has recommended granting emergency use authorisation for 'Covishield', a Covid-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University and Swedish drugmaker AstraZeneca. Now, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) will take the final decision on emergency approval of the vaccine based on the expert panel's recommendations. According to sources, Covid-19 vaccination drive could begin by the end of next week in India. World's largest vaccine manufacturer, Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII), has tied up with AstraZeneca to develop Covidshield in the country and produce over 1 billion such vaccines.
