The new, integrated terminal at the city airport, which links the international and domestic terminals and would also have better facilities and amenities, is expected to be opened by September, said sources. The terminal was supposed to be opened in September 2020, but was pushed by a year after the works were brought to a halt by the lockdown imposed to control the spread of COVID-19.

The project was delayed by an year because of the COVID pandemic.
Chennai: A high-level meeting was convened at the airport premises on Thursday, during which officials discussed the ongoing work, deadlines and other details of the project. Though the date of completion has not yet been formally fixed, it was decided to finish it at the earliest, said officials.
According to airport sources, though the integrated terminal is expected to be operational by September, facilities like multi-level car parking, shopping complex, entertainment area and rooms would be taken up only in the second phase, and are expected to be completed by 2022.
Due to the delay, the estimated cost is likely to exceed Rs 3,000 crore – the original estimate was Rs 2,467 crore.
The work to link the international and domestic terminals had commenced in 2018. As part of the plan to enhance the amenities at the airport, it was planned to construct a multi-level car parking facility that can accommodate 2,000 cars, shopping complex, entertainment area, and rooms for VVIPs and other passengers were also being constructed.
The work was split into two phases. In the first phase, the integrated terminal with 108 Immigration counters, extra Customs checking areas, baggage scanners and 15 new aerobridges were planned. The work was supposed to be over by September, but was affected due to the lockdown as most of the workers were from north India who had returned to their hometowns. The work had resumed in June with a few workers but was progressing slow because of the delay in supply of materials, said sources.
