Consultation programme on crime against women and children held

Imphal, December 30 2020: A one day consultation on 'Reflection and way forward on issues and challenges on violence against women and children in Manipur' was held at Castle Hotel, Palace Compound today organised by Women Action for Development (WAD) .

The programme was organised to understand the challenges being faced by the people of the State, particularly women and children during the COVID-19 pandemic and to look forward to the responsibility and steps that one could do for a better future in the coming years, said a statement issued by WAD.

The programme was attended by 60 persons including representatives from various CSOs, scholars, students, social workers and survivors from different districts, added the statement.

The attending representatives from various CSOs delivered speeches and shared their experience on challenges and addressed the issues of women and children during the pandemic, added the statement.

The statement said that Sobita Mangsatabam, Secretary WAD; U Nobokishore, Advisor United NGOs Mission Manipur (UNMM); Hechin Haokip, Secretary Centre for Women and Child Development; Priyadarshini Gangte, Social Activist; P Surbala, Pradhan Waiton Gram Panchayat; Kh Jeevanmala, President UNMM and S Radhapiyari, Secretary EEMA shared their experiences at the programme.

Resolution to forward their demands including speeding up trial process on pending cases of violence against women and children; solving the issues and problems of street vendors; including gender and sex education in the academic curriculum; construction of separate ladies toilet in public places and roadsides; making proper care and providing financial assistance to all the people living with HIV/AIDS; to collectively make efforts to amend customary law in dealing with heinous crime against women and children cases and installation of DNA testing machine at the earliest, to the Government was also made during the programme, added the statement issued by WAD.
