FASTag Deadline Extended In India: Here Are All Details
The road transport ministry has announced the extension of mandatory FASTag toll collection deadline in the country. The new deadline for 100 per cent electronic-based highway toll collection is set on February 15, 2021.
The deadline for mandatory use of FASTag for all vehicles was initially set on January 1, 2021. However, the authorities have decided to extend the dates by a few weeks. The decision could be made due to the ongoing pandemic and the challenges that are involved in the implementation of such a rule.
All vehicles going through the highway tolls across the country need to have a valid FASTag for toll transactions. After the deadline, the highway tolls will no longer accept cash as a mode of payment and have to be electronically using the FASTag.
Apart from the toll collection, the FASTag has been made mandatory for annual renewals of vehicle documents. This includes the third party insurance and the (PUC) Pollution Under Control emission certificate.
According to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, the FASTag had been made mandatory for all registration of new four-wheeler vehicles. New vehicles will come with a FASTag fitted right from the factory. Customer looking to purchase a FASTag can get it from various online and offline options.
The FASTag mobile app has also received a new update. Now, it lets the user check the balance on the tag easily. FASTag can be purchased from all national highway fee plazas, regional transport offices (RTOs), transport hubs, common service centres, as well as petrol pumps. It can be purchased online as well via bank portals and other e-commerce sites such as PayTM and Amazon; among others.
Recently, the (NHAI) National Highways Authority Of India announced a record toll collection through FASTag crossing Rs 80 Crore in a single day. The milestone mark was achieved on December 24, 2020. Toll plazas across the country completed over 50 lakh transactions on the same day.
Thoughts About The FASTag Deadline Extended In India
The FASTag deadline has been extended to help motorists who are yet to purchase the tag for their vehicles. Using FASTag at tolls is the fastest and safest mode of payment available in the country. The authorities have also enforced the rule for having a valid FASTag for annual renewals of vehicle documents such as insurance and pollution certificate.
