In order to check the mutation of strain (N501Y) SARS-CoV-2 virus in Punjab, the state government has decided to send 5 per cent positive samples per week to the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Delhi, and NCDC, Delhi-Division of Biotechnology, Epidemiology and Central Surveillance Unit.
Principal Secretary, Medical Education and Research, DK Tiwari said it was part of the master plan conceived by the state government led by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to contain the spread of the new virus in Punjab. Tiwari said Punjab had sent 80 random positive samples from Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory, GMC Patiala, 40 each from VRDL, Amritsar and VRDL, Faridkot, to NIV, Pune, to check the emergence of the new strain. — TNS
