Congress against changing name of Aurangabad: MPCC chief

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Dec 31 (UNI) Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president and state Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat on Thursday made it clear that his party is against changing the name of Aurangabad city to Sambhajinagar, as demanded by Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) last week.
While addressing media persons after a meet with the party workers here ahead of civic elections, he said that the issue of name changing of the city was not included in the common minimum programme of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, consisting of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress.
Therefore, the Congress is not in favour of changing the name of Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar and will continue to do so, he maintained.
On corona pandemic, Mr Thorat said that the corona crisis broke out in the state within days of the formation of the MVA government in the state but under the leadership of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, the state has done a satisfactory job in last one year.
"Everybody in the government has done a good job, whether it's a decision like the farmers' loan waiver or a solution to the corona crisis," he said and expressed satisfaction that all eligible farmers in the state have benefited from the loan waiver scheme.
Asked about differences in the MVA government, the MPCC chief sought to play down the issue and asserted that the work of MVA was going on smoothly.
Asked whether the constituents of MVA will contest upcoming civic elections together or on their own, Mr Thorat said that the Congress is preparing for the elections on its own but since the MVA is in power in the state, the decision regarding the same will be taken by all the three parties together.
Moreover, since the only objective of the Congress is to keep BJP away from power in the national interest and the public interest, the MVA will likely continue even in the civic elections, he indicated.
Otherwise, the Congress will fight on its own, he added.
