A poll officer fell unconscious at a counting centre in Periyapatna and died of cardiac arrest. Boregowda, 52, a resident of Kushalanagar in Kodagu, was an assistant executive engineer.

Lucky draw, coin toss to choose winner
The fate of about 50 candidates were decided by the toss of a coin or a lottery. In Gohalli ward of Challahalli panchayat in Hunsur, two women who had secured 100 votes each were elected through a lottery. In Raichur, Bheemappa and Arunamma from Sunkeshwarahala, Ramadurga GP, reached a tie with 388 votes each. Poll officials tossed a coin to choose the winner.
When deceased candidate won
A deceased candidate, CB Amboji, emerged victorious with 414 votes in Khanapura taluk’s Kukkeri gram panchayat. He had died on December 27.
Transgender from Mysuru wins
Devika, a transgender candidate, was elected from ward no. 7 of Saligrama panchayat, KR Nagar, Mysuru. Devika won by a margin of five votes, defeating the nearest candidate Yashoda.
95-year-old woman elected
Gujjamma Shankrappa Hosamani, 95, was elected from Muttangi village in Chitaguppa taluk, Bidar district. She contested from ward no. 2 and secured 287 votes against her opponent who bagged 254.
After 20 yrs, Independent tastes first victory
After unsuccessful attempts for the past two decades, a candidate who contested the gram panchayat polls managed to win from Mutaga GP in Belagavi district. Shyam Mutagekar was in tears when results of the two-phase election were announced on Wednesday. “It was my dream to get elected to the panchayat and I had contested all GP polls since 2000. This time, I managed to win by 36 votes,” said a thrilled Shyam, who contested as an independent candidate.

CM BS Yediyurappa to address media today
Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa, who had predicted win for party-backed candidates in most seats, will address the media on Thursday.

The results demonstrated the BJP is a favourite of not just urban populace but also of rural people,” said minister KS Eshwarappa. Opposition leader Siddaramaiah blamed BJP for trying to woo victorious candidates backed by the Congress by money and muscle power out of frustration as it could not win the hearts of rural India. “Reports suggest that Congress-supported candidates are winning in a majority of seats. Rural India has always supported the Congress in panchayat elections. Rural India is also frustrated by the policies implemented by the BJP and they found GP elections as a perfect opportunity to teach BJP a lesson,” he tweeted.

Results for 54,041 seats of 5,728 gram panchayats announced
Karnataka state election commission has said it has announced results for 54,041 seats of 5,728 gram panchayats while that of the remaining 36,781 seats will be announced today. The counting is still under way due to the usage of ballot papers.

Karnataka: BJP, Congress claim big victory in the panchayat polls
Both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress in Karnataka on Wednesday claimed major victories for candidates backed by them in the recent elections to over 5,700 village panchayats even as counting of votes polled in the grass-root level exercise was underway.
