Eminent Odia music director Shantanu Mohapatra passes away

Bhubaneswar, Dec 30 (UNI) Eminent Music Director , Singer and Composer
Shantanu Mohapatra passed away at a private hospital here late last night.
He was 84.
Family sources said he was suffering from Pneumonia and admitted to the
hospital two days back. He breathed his last at midnight last night.
Mohapatra was born at Baripada in Myurbhanja district in November 1936.
A Bsc in applied Geology and Geophysics from IIT Kharagpur, he joined the
Odisha government service as a Geologist and retired as the Director Mining
and Geology in 1994.
A born singer late Mohapatra has composed hundreds of Odia modern songs
and scored music for 10 jatras.
He has also scored music for many Odia, Bengali and Hindi feature films which
won both regional and national awards.
These films included Chilika Teerey, Priyatama, Agni Parikshya, Meghamukti, Sita
Rati, Jitan Sangram in Odia, Mahaprithabbi (Bengali), Sodh (Hindi) which won the
Golden Lotus award in 1979.
He was the first Odia music director to work in films in five different languages-
Odia, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese and Telugu.
He has won several awards including Lalita Kala Academy, in 2004.
Mohapatra who was associated with music industry for more than six decades was
the first Odia to work with great singers like Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Usha
Mangeshkar, Anuradha Paudwal, Usha Uthup Mana Dey, and Kavita Krishnamurthy.
Chief Miister Naveen Patnaik today expressed his profound grief over the death of
Mohapatra , expressed his sympathies to the bereaved family members and prayed
for the salvation of the departed soul.
The chief minister announced that the last rites of Mohapatra would be performed
with full state honours.
In a condolence message Mr Patnaik said Mohapatra has sacrificed his life for music.
On his death Odisha has lost one of its greatest sons.
“His contribution to music industry will keep him alive in the hearts of millions of music
lovers, he said.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also expressed his
grief over the demise of Mohapatra.
