UK-India flights suspended till January 7, 2021

New Delhi: The government today announced that they have extended the suspension of flights to the UK by seven more days till January 7, 2021.

“Decision has been taken to extend the temporary suspension of flights to & from the UK till 7 January 2021. Thereafter strictly regulated resumption will take place for which details will be announced shortly,” aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted on Wednesday.
Regulated resumption could mean not all flights on the route will be started in one go and passengers arriving from the country could be subjected to mandatory institutional quarantine.

Puri had announced yesterday that no long term suspension of flights with the UK will be announced.

India banned flights to and from the UK starting December 23 till the end of this year after the new strain of the coronavirus was detected in the UK.

India has also found 20 people, who have been infected with the same strain of the Corona Virus.

The government also started tracing all passengers who had arrived from the UK since November 25.
The suspension of flights led to cancellations of 37 one-way direct flights per week to the UK from India operated by four carriers – Air India, Vistara, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. An estimated 11,000 people were booked on these direct flights.

A week long extension would also mean similar number of flight cancellations.
