The counting of votes for the Karnataka Gram Panchayat election was underway. The two-phased Gram Panchayat elections were held on December 22 and 27. Even though the Gram Panchayat elections were held on a non-party basis, all the three main contenders, the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (Secular) or JDS, are vying to get a majority of their supporters elected. The outcome of the Gram Panchayat election is expected to reflect the current mood of the rural voters in the state. Since the voting was held on paper ballots, counting is expected to be completed by Wednesday night.
A couple contests in different villages under Akkirampura gram panchayat in Koratagere taluk, Tumkur district. While husband C Nagaraju, who contested from Akkirampura, lost by 25 votes, his wife Anjanamma contested from Venkatapura and won by 30 votes margin.
BJP-backed Candidates Lead | Initial trends indicate that the candidates backed by the BJP have won a majority of panchayat seats in Karnataka as the counting of votes progressed on Wednesday. Though these polls don't take place on party symbols, all political parties have put in efforts to ensure that the candidate supported by them wins, so as to have their hold on grassroot level politics, which may prove advantageous for them in taluk or zilla panchayat and even assembly polls whenever it happens. According to sources, the BJP has so far secured 4,228 seats, followed by the Congress with 2,265 seats, JD(S) 1,167 seats and independents 678 seats.

In Bagalkote, the Congress-backed candidate, Mallappa, from Arakeri gram panchayat, ward no 1 of Belaagi taluk, won by one vote.
Meanwhile, few candidates were declared winner after a toss was held as a tie-breaker. In Raichur, two candidates from Sunkeshwarahala, Ramadurga gram panchayat got 388 votes each. In Chikmagaluru, two candidates - manoj and krishnegowda - got 242 votes each. Manoj won by a lottery.
In Belagavi, CC Amboji, who passed away three days ago, has won the Khanapura taluk's kakkeri with 414 votes.
According to the Karnataka State Election Commission officials, counting is taking place at all Taluk headquarters in the state by adhering to strict COVID-19 protocol of mandatory wearing of face mask, social distancing and hand hygiene.
The counting process began at 226 centres at 8 am and the results are expected to be out by afternoon. Over 1,100 security personnel have been deployed at the counting centres, State ElectionCommisioner B Basavaraju said.

The ruling BJP had conducted a spirited campaign by launching its Gram Swaraj campaign much ahead of its rivals Congress and the JD-S with the aim of securing at least 80 per cent of the total seats.

Covid-19 Precautions In Place | Voting took place in both phases with necessary COVID precautions amid the prevailing pandemic situation.
Ruling BJP Confident of Victory | Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday claimed the ruling BJP supported candidates are likely to win majority of the seats. "According to my information, it is certain that 85-90 per cent BJP supported candidates will get elected in Gram Panchayat polls," he had said.
