Odisha bans all zero night celebrations on Dec 31-Jan 1

Bhubaneswar, Dec 30 (UNI) Odisha government on Wednesday banned all the zero night functions throughout the state planned on December 31 and January 1 to celebrate the New Year,in order prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

An order issued by the state Chief Secretary said congregations in public places including hotels, restaurants, clubs, parks, convention halls, Kalyan mandaps for zero night celebration to welcome the new year and similar other functions on December 31 and January 1 shall remain prohibited throughout the state.

The order was issued in view of the detection of a new variant of SARS- COV 2 which was detected in the UK and which is believed to spread much more rapidly.

Any person found violating the order shall be punished under the provision of the Disaster Management Act 2005 and other relevant laws, the order said.

The government also issued guidelines for the month of January for the surveillance and containment of COVID-19

As per the guidelines gatherings for marriages shall be allowed with a ceiling of not more than 200 people and funeral/last rite related gatherings will have a ceiling of 100 people.

Wearing of masks, maintaining social distancing and provision of thermal screening, use of hand wash or sanitizer will be mandatory.

The cinema halls and theatres will be allowed to reopen with 50 per cent capacity from January 1.
The Department of School & Mass Education, Higher Education, Skill Development and Technical Education will decide the date of re-opening of the educational institutions under their control in a graded manner.
All Academic/Technical/ Skill Development Institutions (except Medical Colleges) will remain closed. Examinations (academic, competitive and entrance tests), evaluation and other administrative activities Online/distance learning will continue.
The teaching and non-teaching staff are permitted to carry out online teaching/tele-counselling and related work from school/college/institution.
Anganwadi Centres shall remain closed till January 31, next, the order said.
