Under the ‘Swachh Buddha Dariya Mission’, the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana, on Monday started an awareness rally for educating the masses. The rally aimed to spread awareness for making Buddha Nullah, which was once known as Buddha Dariya, free of solid waste. Students of seven colleges of the city took participate in the rally.
The Buddha Dariya is being polluted with untreated sewerage water, waste from factories and dairy complexes for past decades. Besides, a huge amount of solid waste is also being dumped into the nullah in the jurisdiction of the MC.
Now, the students of SCD Government College, Government College for Girls, Kamla Lohtia Sanatan Dharam College, Arya College, Government ITI, SDP College and Government Polytechnic College will visit areas along the nullah and educate the masses to not throw solid waste into it, as per information. They will also educate residents about segregation of solid waste in their houses itself, besides educating them about diseases that spread due to solid waste disposal into the water body.
Cabinet Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu flagged off the rally near Chand Cinema.
He said the work order related to the Rs 650-crore Budha Nullah Rejuvenation Project had been issued after the completion of the tendering process and Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh would lay the foundation of the project next month.
He said the work related to the project would be carried out in a transparent manner and not even a single penny of the public funds would be misused at any cost.
Meanwhile, Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu said pamphlets regarding the same had also been provided to the students and the same would be distributed among the residents.
He said to aware the residents about not disposing solid waste into the nullah, several wall paintings had been prepared along it, but if any person violates the norms, he would be fined up to Rs 5,000.
He said 24 nodal officers and 63 marshals had been deputed by the MC, Ludhiana, for the purpose, who would keep round-the-clock vigil along the nullah.
MLAs Rakesh Pandey, Surinder Dawar and Sanjay Talwar, MC Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal and councillors were among those others present.
