Yogi govt not allowing me to pay floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on party's foundation day: Lallu

Lucknow, Dec 28(UNI) Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Kumar Lallu on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of the state with preventing him from offering flowers at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of the foundation day of the Congress and as a protest, started fasting with Congress workers.

Lallu is sitting on a fast with party activists at the State Congress Headquarters here in Mall Avenue. He said that the Congress Sandesh Yatra was coming out of the state office and he had to garland the statue of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi but the police did not let him do it.

In a tweet Lallu mentioned that he was going to pay floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of the party's foundation day but was stopped by the arrogant government of Uttar Pradesh through its police force.

"In the country of Gandhiji, we cannot even pay tribute to his statue. What kind of democracy is this? Uttar Pradesh has an undeclared emergency. We will fast”, he asserted.

Meanwhile, Lucknow Deputy Commissioner of Police (central) Somen Verma said that they had asked the state president to go with two-four people and garland the statue, but he did not agree. Since a large crowd is not allowed due to the COVID pandemic and the High Court has also stayed, the Congress workers were prevented from going ahead with their plan.

But the Congress leaders alleged that activists headed by the state president were leaving the party headquarters for the Gandhi statue at Hazratganj when the police blocked the road and the president was not allowed to leave.
During this time, there was also a furor between the police officers and Lallu. Lallu questioned the officer, whether this government will allow flowers to be placed on Gandhi's statue or not.
The police officer said that he would not let him go in that area (Gandhi statue site). Following which, Lallu announced that he will be sitting on a fast and sat on a dharna with party workers.
