Student activist and author Gurmehar Kaur was recently spotted at the Singhu and Tikri borders, extending support to farmers protesting against the three controversial farm laws enacted by the Centre.

She made posters to create awareness on the farm laws and launched a cleanliness drive.

Back home in Urban Estate-Phase 1 here, she told The Tribune: “I came to India to join the agitation. While people from across the globe are supporting farmers, it was almost like a home calling for me.”

Gurmehar urged the Modi government to accept the demands of the farmers braving the cold on the outskirts of the national capital. “This is the first time that the country is witnessing a protest on such a large scale.”

Backing farmers since the beginning of the protest, she had earlier made headlines after she took to Twitter to share translated versions of Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh’s tweets directed at Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut.

A student of literature at Oxford University, UK, Gurmeher had left for the protest site on December 21 with a group of city-based women volunteers of NGO Fikr-e-Hondh. She urged the youth and locals to join the agitation in large numbers to force the Centre into revoking the farm laws.

On growing activism against the Centre in Punjab, she said: “People in Punjab have always been vocal about their rights and have fought peaceful battles.”
