Kerala reports 5,887 new COVID cases, 5,029 recoveries: Health Minister

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 29 (UNI) Kerala on Tuesday reported 5,887 fresh cases of COVID-1, while 5,029 patients also recovered from the disease, Health Minister KK Shailaja said.
The minister in a press release here this evening said "Of the positive cases reported on Tuesday, 5,180 were cases of local transmission and the contact source of infection was not traceable for 555 patients. There are 63 medical or paramedical staff among those infected."
Meanwhile, 24 deaths in the last few days were confirmed on Tuesday due to COVID, taking the death toll in the state to 3,014.
She said 61,778 samples were tested during the last 24 hours with a test positivity rate of 9.53%. A total of 77,89,764 samples have been sent for testing till now.
The district-wise figures for the new positive cases are Kottayam 777, Ernakulam 734, Thrissur 649, Malappuram 610, Pathanamthitta 561, Kozhikode 507, Kollam 437, Thiruvananthapuram 414, Alappuzha 352, Palakkad 249, Kannur 230, Wayanad 208, Idukki 100 and Kasargod 59. Of those diagnosed with the disease, 89 have arrived from outside the state.
The tally of those infected through contact in the districts are Kottayam 728, Ernakulam 651, Thrissur 629, Malappuram 586, Pathanamthitta 446, Kozhikode 467, Kollam 431, Thiruvananthapuram 293, Alappuzha 324, Palakkad 91, Kannur 194, Wayanad 195, Idukki 95 and Kasaragod 50.
The count for the infected healthcare workers from the districts are Kannur 11, Pathanamthitta 10, Kozhikode 8, Thiruvananthapuram 7, Ernakulam 6, Thrissur 5, Kollam 4, Palakkad & Wayanad 3 each, Kottayam & Kasargod 2 each, and Alappuzha & Malappuram 1 each.
The district-wise numbers of the patients who tested negative on Tuesday are Thiruvananthapuram 375, Kollam 348, Pathanamthitta 242, Alappuzha 237, Kottayam 581, Idukki 303, Ernakulam 377, Thrissur 604, Palakkad 379, Malappuram 475, Kozhikode 645, Wayanad 223, Kannur 203 and Kasaragod 37.
She said 6,81,397 people have so far recovered from the coronavirus infection in Kerala even as 64,861 patients are still undergoing treatment for the same.
There are a total of 2,49,162 persons presently under observation in various districts of the state - 2,37,076 are at their homes or institutional quarantine centres and 12,086 in isolation at hospitals. 1,130 people were admitted to hospitals on Tuesday.
One place was declared as a new hotspot on Tuesday, while three other places were excluded. There are currently 463 hotspots in the state.
