Punjab gets four elite bulls imported from Germany

Chandigarh, Dec 27 (UNI) The Punjab Government on Sunday received four HF breed bulls, imported from Germany.
Punjab Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa said here that under the Rashtriya Gokal Mission, the National Dairy Development Board has imported elite bulls to enhance the Germ Plasm of crossbreed cows in the country.
The bulls provided to Punjab would not only boost the milk production, but also help improve the breed of milch cattle in the state, he added.
As everyone is aware that traditional agriculture is no longer lucrative for ryots due to rapidly increasing cost of food production, therefore, the Punjab government is focusing hard on developing dairy as an allied farming sector in the state, thus providing free insemination, free vaccination services and other services to the livestock farmers in the state, to make dairy a profitable sector.

He said the Animal Husbandry Department charges only a nominal fee from the livestock farmers for most of the services.

Additional Chief Secretary of the Animal Husbandry Department VK Janjua said that the imported HF Bulls are in the age group of 10-12 months and semen production will duly start within the next two years.
He added that during the first year, around 8,000-10,000 Semen Straw production is expected from these bulls, which will increase to 25,000 semen straws in the coming years.
The exotic Germplasm will be introduced into the local gene pool, resulting in overall improvement of the breed, said Mr Januja.

Dr HS Kahlon, Director Animal Husbandry Punjab, said that these imported bulls have been kept at Semen Bank Roop Nagar under the supervision of experts.
When semen production from these new bulls will start, the semen straws will be distributed to all veterinary hospitals and dispensaries of the districts through the semen bank and will be utilised for artificial insemination program of the department, he added.
