The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has extended the term of the pollution monitoring committee in the Ganges. The same committee is also responsible for monitoring the compliance of environmental regulations in Uttar Pradesh.
A bench headed by NGT Chairman Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said, unless the Uttar Pradesh government constitutes any other effective alternative system, it would not be appropriate to shut down the committee. Therefore, the tenure of the Monitoring Committee will be extended by six months.
The bench said that if the state government has any other suggestion then it can. The initial tenure of the committee headed by former High Court judge SVS Rathore was six months, which has been extended from time to time.
