Patiala, December 26
A bag containing mobile phones and tobacco products was tossed inside the Patiala Central Jail premises here today by three persons, purportedly relatives of three inmates.
The incident came to light when an inmate was caught picking up the bag by a patrol team along the jail boundary. The bag contained nine mobile phones, four chargers, nine data cables, four earphones, a pen drive, 19 tobacco packets and two cigarette packets.
Shivraj Singh, jail superintendent, said the inmate claimed the bag was thrown by his and two other inmates’ relatives. The suspected inmates have been identified as Gurdeep Singh, Vikramjeet Singh and Sikander Singh.
He added the inmates took advantage of the foggy conditions to smuggle in goods, but alert officials thwarted their attempt.
Following the incident, officials raided barrack No. 1 (quarantine) and recovered three more mobile phones from the possession of another inmate.
Harry Boparai, SHO, Tripuri, said a case had been registered against seven persons, including four inmates and three of their relatives. The inmate from whose barrack seizure was made had also been booked. The police would seek remand of the inmates for further investigation, he added.
