Every year, in the Christmas and New Year week, Gurgaon Police launches a safety campaign by celebrating the joy of giving. Under this road safety initiative, Gurgaon Traffic Police offers flowers and helmets as gifts to traffic violators, requesting them to follow the rules. On Friday, Gurgaon Police officials urged Gurugrammers to join them in creating awareness towards road safety and to ensure that everyone around them follows rules. Police officials collaborated with the Road Safety Organisation (RSO) members and corporates. As part of the campaign, police officials stopped vehicles and offered gifts to violators.
The four-five hour rally, ‘Safety Parade with Santa’, crossed malls and markets. Later, the Gurgaon Traffic Police cops were also joined by shoppers and children. These children stopped vehicles, recognised offenders and helped cops challan errant drivers. They were carrying posters of messages such as ‘Don't Drink and Drive’, ‘Wear Helmet’ and ‘Follow Traffic Rules’. Police officials say that such a traffic drive with Santa Clause makes messages clearer. This year, between January 1 and December 14, Gurgaon Traffic Police has issued 2,16,199 challans. These challans include those for entry in no-entry zones, drunk driving, jumping red lights, parking on the wrong side, lane changing, wrong parking and driving without a helmet.
Currently, Gurgaon Police is also conducting a drive to affix reflective tapes at accident prone points. Police officials say that the drive will continue for the next few days. Ahead of New Year celebrations, police officials will be deployed in several areas. A police official says, “Even after strict checking on roads, people violate traffic rules. That’s why, apart from asking commuters to follow rules, we are asking children to ensure that their parents do not violate traffic rules.”
