Ludhiana, December 25
Heaps of construction/demolition waste can be commonly seen in green belts and vacant lands in many parts of the city. The Municipal Corporation (MC) has been planning to set up a plant for the management of the construction and demolition (C&D) waste in the city for the past few years, but the project has not been started till date.
When tenders were floated for the first time for the proposed project to set up such a plant, no company came forward to place any bid as per information. Thereafter, tenders were floated for the second time, while technical bids in this regard are likely to be opened on Monday.
At an estimated cost of around Rs 12 crore, the plant is supposed to be set up at Dhandari Kalan.
According to the Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Management Rules, 2016, the MC Ludhiana is supposed to ensure the provision of proper management of the construction and demolition waste. Now, the plant is to be set up under the smart city mission.
Currently, debris and other construction or demolition waste are openly being dumped along the roads, vacant lands or plots in various parts of the city. Heaps of such waste can be seen on Tajpur Road, Dhandari, Hambran Road, areas near Buddha Nullah and even in various colonies. It has been seen that the waste generated during the demolition drives of the civic body is also dumped at different sites.
